Car ownership guide

Is an electric car worth it?

There is no universal EV answer. Charging access, annual driving, local energy prices and depreciation can matter more than the advertised range.

Quick verdict

EVs are easier to justify when you can charge conveniently, drive enough to benefit from operating-cost differences and plan to keep the vehicle long enough. They can be a poor fit when reliable charging is difficult or the purchase premium overwhelms realistic savings.

Compare total ownership cost

Use purchase price after incentives, financing, insurance, energy, maintenance, taxes and expected resale value. Run more than one depreciation scenario because resale uncertainty can materially change the result.

Range is not the only question

Daily charging routine, winter conditions, road-trip charging and the reliability of your common routes may matter more than a single rated-range number. Evaluate the exact vehicle in your market.
